As spring approaches, all things come to life. On February 25, 2023, the Physics Laboratory and Demonstration Center welcomed the first batch of visitors for the new academic year, more than 600 high school students from the science classes of Pidu No.2 High School. Guo Jian, Deputy Secretary and Vice Dean of the School of Physical Science and Technology, Wei Zhenxing, Deputy Secretary of the School of Physical Science and Technology, Fan Daihe, Wei Yun, Zhang Wenting, and Lin Yuexia, teachers from the Experiment Center, as well as relevant leaders and teachers of Pidu No.2 High School, participated in the event.
The main part of the exchange activity was carried out in two demonstration laboratories. X6211 is a laboratory for mechanics, electromagnetism, and wave theory experiments, and was taught by teacher Zhang Wenting; X6212 is a laboratory for optics and modern physics experiments, and was taught by teacher Lin Yuexia. The students were divided into eight groups and experienced a variety of physics demonstration experiments. Among them, experimental phenomena that violate common sense in life, such as rolling cones, the Jukovsky chair, and the Bernoulli suspension device, not only stimulated the students' interest but also deepened their understanding of the relevant principles of mechanics. The lightning rod, multi-functional eddy currents, and other experimental phenomena allowed students to fully appreciate the intricacies of electromagnetics. The experiments on stationary waves and fish washing enabled the students to have a deeper understanding of the propagation of waves in physics. In the optical laboratory, students were fully introduced to the characteristics of light and its important applications through the experiments on the infinite peek, fiber-optics, cosmic rays, laser monitoring, wireless optical communication, and other experimental phenomena.
Throughout the experience, the students not only enjoyed listening to the teacher's explanations, but also tried to operate various experimental instruments personally, carefully observed and actively thought about the experimental phenomena, and were curious about the experimental principles. This visit and experiential activity encouraged students to explore the physical realities behind complex phenomena, fully experience the charm of physics, and effectively cultivate their practical skills, enhance the scientific literacy of middle school students, and stimulate their innovation awareness. It also fully demonstrated the radiating effect of the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Physics.
The demonstration laboratory of the Physics Laboratory and Demonstration Center of Southwest Jiaotong University is open to undergraduate students, middle school students, and elementary school students. The laboratory covers interesting physics demonstration experiments in all subjects such as force, heat, light, electromagnetism, modern physics, etc., which can effectively stimulate students' interest in learning, fully understand physics knowledge, and deepen their understanding of physical concepts through practical operation.
