In order to facilitate the smooth transition of the 2023 cohort of graduate students into their academic journey, establish clear learning goals, and foster a proactive mindset, the School of Physical Science and Technology conducted the 2023 Graduate School Opening Ceremony and Freshmen Orientation on November 9th in classroom J4104. The event was attended by Guo Jian, Deputy Secretary of the School Party Committee and Deputy Dean; Zhou Tao, Assistant to the Dean and Director of the Graduate Education and Teaching Center; Wang Jingya, Deputy Director of the Graduate Education and Teaching Center and Graduate Education Affairs; Yong Teng, Secretary of the Youth League Committee; and Zhou Ling, a graduate counselor. The meeting was presided over by Zhou Ling, and all the graduate students of the 2023 cohort participated.
The foundation of personal growth and achievement lies in one's ideals and beliefs. To instill a sense of patriotism and a commitment to the mission in the new graduate students, Guo Jian, Deputy Secretary of the School Party Committee and Deputy Dean, delivered the first ideological and political education class. He interpreted the content of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, emphasizing the importance of internalizing and externalizing the study of party theory and knowledge. Guo Jian encouraged the students to have firm ideals and beliefs, maintain consistency between words and actions, and become pillars of the new era. Furthermore, he pointed out that actively practicing the core socialist values is a concrete manifestation of one's ideals and beliefs. Combining theory with the students' reality, he provided in-depth explanations on how contemporary graduate students can embody these values.
Research integrity is the cornerstone of technological innovation and a bottom line that researchers must uphold. Zhou Tao, Assistant to the Dean and Director of the Graduate Education and Teaching Center, delivered a special lecture on "Academic Integrity for Graduate Students." The lecture, structured logically and progressively, started with the definition of academic misconduct. Zhou Tao listed five harms related to academic misconduct and showcased the adverse effects caused by typical instances of academic misconduct both domestically and internationally. This aimed to guide students in setting their research bottom line, consciously promoting the scientific spirit, upholding scientific ethics, curbing academic misconduct, and fostering a positive academic atmosphere.
Graduate education represents the highest level of education in the country, and today's graduate students are the future main force of research and innovation. Their academic capabilities, scholarly demeanor, aspirations, and pursuits will determine the level of research and innovation in China, influencing the speed of constructing an innovative nation.
Centering on new ideas for graduate education at the university level, Wang Jingya, Deputy Director of the Graduate Education and Teaching Center, elucidated key aspects of reforming the graduate education model, cultivating practical and innovative capabilities, and encouraging the new students to immerse themselves in research. Zhou Ling, the graduate counselor, provided an overview of incentive regulations, such as scholarships and honorary titles, motivating students to excel in critical aspects like coursework, internships, opening a thesis topic, mid-term assessments, thesis reviews and defenses, and degree evaluations. This proactive planning aims to enhance research and innovation capabilities.
Freshmen orientation is a crucial step for new students to adapt to graduate life, establish life goals, and cultivate noble characters. The opening ceremony and freshmen orientation activities contribute to strengthening the students' ideals and beliefs, fostering a sense of responsibility for the era, helping them adapt quickly to their new roles, clarify their self-positioning, scientifically plan their research and study lives, and embark on a new chapter in their graduate studies!
